Advancements in the Treatment of Degenerative Myelopathy

Presented by Debbie (Gross) Torraca, DPT, MSPT, CCRP, CCMT, Board-Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist Emeritus

Cornell University defines degenerative myelopathy (DM) as “a disease that affects the spinal cord in dogs, causing progressive muscle weakness and loss of coordination.” Common in breeds like German shepherds, boxers, Bernese mountain dogs and others, this debilitating disease currently has no cure. New treatment options are available, however, to help manage effects and improve quality of life.

In this webinar, Dr. Debbie (Gross) Torraca examines the multimodal management of DM, including laser therapy, core strengthening, therapeutic exercise, functional activities, and ongoing assessment using quality of life measures. Focusing on recent advancements in laser therapy, Dr. Torraca also shares new treatment protocols designed to prolong function in dogs with DM.

  • Review of degenerative myelopathy: causes, symptoms, and current treatment options
  • How to incorporate multiple modalities for optimal outcomes
  • New laser therapy protocols to help prolong the quality of life of dogs with DM
